Why Can't We all Just Get Along?

Posted on December 19, 2020 by Grady Lagerstrom

It seems that there has to be some fundamental problem with human communication. Wherever you transform it is easy to get people having a disagreement, a conflict or one individual angry or frustrated with another for reasons uknown. But exactly why is it like this?

I think among the key problems for all of us humans is our method of communicating by using language is quite limited. When one considers that people all have another picture inside our minds of how things are and how they must be, it is a bit simpler to realize the foundation for so much conflict. The usage of the spoken word and its own inabiility to totally convey meaning creates communication barriers for folks.

For example, I've an image about something in my own mind. I make an effort to convey that picture through words to some other. See your face must hear those words and put them together right into a picture in his mind's eye. One problem is based on the truth that we create different pictures. The picture I started with may be entirely unique of the one he's got constructed from hearing my words.

Couple that with just how that lots of view life as a chess game, where they need to out maneuver their opponent and something can easily see where problems creep in. Mistrust, greed, selfishness and paranoia are like weeds inside our minds that people must exert conscious and constant effort to eliminate or risk unnecessary conflict, hurt and disappointment.

When two different people talk to one another, these conflicting pictures or perspectives enter into play. One person's words could be kind, compassionate and forged with good intentions. Yet, the individual receiving what may believe the other has been mean, rude, manipulative, overbearing, spiteful or any of several negative factors. A conflict results predicated on false or partially inaccurate notions. Some conflicts are clear. Others fester in your brain of an individual and turn out in passive-aggressive ways. In any case, these situations could make people miserable.

Another problem is due to the simple proven fact that for as many folks as you can find on earth, there are as much different degrees of knowing of any given situation. Some could have more information to utilize than others. I cannot count the amount of occasions when I thought things were a proven way, when actually these were another. I cannot count the amount of times that I blamed someone for doing wrong when there is some factor that I wasn't alert to. A person's selection of knowledge is bound.

Multiply that by all of the people on the planet having similar experiences and it's really easy to understand how conflicts start. Will there be a remedy? It's difficult to state. Without having a simple communication form that stems beyond the usage of the spoken word, communication is definitely going to be considered a quagmire of complexities between any several people.

I believe that the situation will be better if we'd ways to communicate our entire mental picture at any moment to others, filled with the emotional background and the annals of what made us reach that mind-set or perspective. That's a lot more information compared to the spoken language of humans seems with the capacity of conveying.

One thing is for certain, to be able to go above the limitations of human language one must hire a strong character, tempered with endurance and tolerance, alongside compassion and a need to get nearer to the reality of any matter. Only then is one able to live more harmoniously with others.
